Features
- To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with fast films
- To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used
- To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (ie: above ISO400) and allow it to be used outdoors in blight situations.
- To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which would normally cause over-exposure.
Product Description
Photographing solar eclipses and ultra-bright light sources can be extremely dangerous. This filter reduces light values by 9 stops to less than 1/500th of its original intensity and allows safe photography. It can also be used to achieve super slow shutter speeds in daylight to render moving subjects invisible. Neutral Density filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear grey and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance. This neutral density filter has three main uses: 1) To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars. 2) To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background. 3) To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations. Multicoated to minimize reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting. Neutral Density factor: ND400x (exposure adjustment = approx. 9 stops, reduces ISO 1/500)SimilarProduct

Great filter
by .. Robert G. Scumaci (New York)
Great filter, which permits long exposure work. You should know it is very dark, so you need to remove it to recompose your shot. You can't see anything through the lens with this filter on. Great results. Permits nice long 15+ second exposures even in daylight.
Works great!

This filter works great, just as I was expecting. I have been able to achieve 30 second exposures even in broad daylight, it's awesome. The way that you can use this filter to show motion of water or clouds is pretty striking. A couple things you should note however. You must first focus and compose your shot BEFORE putting the filter on as it goes almost completely black through the viewfinder. My sony a200 can't really meter that well through this glass so I have to guess usually by adding about +1 stop of exposure. I havent noticed any color casts or any loss of sharpness though I haven't tested extensively, results seem perfectly acceptable.
expensive but well worth the cost

I spend thousands of dollars on lens, this little gem allows me to use those lens during day time without getting that over exposed sky or other bright areas, don't have to wait till evening or very early light to get that great veil look in water, great depth of field without going to the smallest apertures.
