Must-have for 18-55mm lens keepers 5 by .. ohroonoko (Silicon Valley, USA)
The lens hood can be secured to the Nikkor 18-55mm lens in reverse orientation; this is how I carry it in my soft case or camera bag or at night. Even with it secured in reverse you can still turn the focus ring manually. It clips on fast and easy and is made well. If you plan on keeping your kit lens for a while this is a must-have and a no-brainer for the price (under $20). I only wish this hood had come with my D60 camera kit in the first place!

Nice hood for the 18-55mm VR kit lens 5 by .. Neil H. (Middletown, CT United States)
Note that the HB-33 lens hood for the earlier (non-VR) version of the 18-55mm kit lens attaches in the same way, by spring-loaded clips that fit into a groove around the front of the lens, and will work perfectly well on the VR lens but can't be reversed on it because of the VR lens's larger diameter. That's the only reason you need the HB-45 hood instead on this lens.

Also, to the fellow who complained that this hood is not flower-shaped: that's because the front component of the 18-55mm lens rotates when focusing. Flower-shaped hoods are only suitable for lenses with non-rotating front ends, since the "petals" must be aligned properly with the lens.

I like these lens hoods. They are quick and easy to snap on or off the lens by pressing the buttons on the sides, and do their job well. Yes, it would be nice if Nikon included them with the lens as they do with most other lenses, but for $15 or so I don't mind paying for them.

Excellent hood 5 by .. Jeff Hansman (Carmel Valley, CA USA)
If you have the 18-55mm kit lens that comes with some of the Nikon dSLRs, get this hood. It snaps on easy as pie, comes off just easily, and can be stowed on the lens in reverse position. True, the spring-loaded tabs that hold it on are a bit delicate, buy hey, you're putting it on a precision instrument. If you can handle your camera, you can handle this hood. Great product!

Just what my D60 needed. 5 by .. Nicholas Erwin (Waterbury, VT)
I knew that this lens hood woulden't help a whole lot on lens flare/glare, But I have been in spots where the sun is just glaring right on you and it can affect the photos, and the lens hood helped a lot.

I also got it for the looks too, it my D60 looks really nice with the 18-55VR + HB-45 lens hood. I like it a lot, theres not much that I can say about it because it's just a lens hood.

The only complaint that I have is, the price. It is a little expensive, but I mean come on people it's only 17 dollars. it's not that big of a deal.

Anyways, I love the lens hood. Just remember when you use your built in flash at wide angle, to take off the hood or put it on reverse. The SB600 will fix that so you don't have to take off the lens hood, which will be my next purchase.

I highly recommend this hood if you have the 18-55 lens.

Nikon HB-45 Lens Hood 5 by .. andybender ()
Definitely worth the $17 or so dollars for me. being able to block out incidental light and focus on your subject is very helpful for a new photographer like myself. There was some contention when I bought whether it worked backwards, and the answer is yes and no. The hood fits on the lens in the backward position securely, but the grips that hold it in place do not hold in a way that lets you manual focus with it on. You will have to autofocus or take it off. Manual focus in the forward position works just fine, and it is not likely to fall off the lens in either position.

$17 seems excessive for a piece of plastic, but you are paying for the result, not the materials.
